Police Clearance Certificate
Police Clearance Certificate or PCC is like an extended Passport Service. You must possess a Passport before you apply for a PCC. It is used for various purposes such as Job, Education or PR, etc. Will discuss about it in the later sections. The procedure to apply for a PCC is exactly the same as that of a Passport. As in, you need to login to the passport website. Select PCC and then go ahead and fill-in all the details, make the payment (which is 750 INR as of July, 2026) and then book an appointment at the passport office. After you visit the passport office, police verification has to be done at the local police station and then the PCC will be sent by registered post office to the communication address mentioned in your application.
Passport police verification in India is a mandatory identity‑and‑address check done by your local police station, usually completed within 5–14 days using the mPassport Police App. It may occur before passport issuance (Pre‑PV), after issuance (Post‑PV), or be waived for eligible categories such as certain government employees.
What Police Passport Verification Is
Police verification confirms:
- Your identity

- Citizenship details
- Criminal‑record status (if any)
- Authenticity of documents submitted in your passport application
It ensures passports are issued only to genuine, traceable residents
Types of Police Verification
1. Pre‑Police Verification (Pre‑PV)
Done before passport issuance.
Passport is printed only after a Clear police report.
2. Post‑Police Verification (Post‑PV)
Passport is issued first; verification happens afterward.
Common for Tatkaal applications.
3. No Police Verification (No‑PV)
- Applicable for certain exempt categories (e.g., government/PSU employees with Annexure B).
Documents Required
Keep originals and self‑attested copies ready:
- Aadhaar Card
- Voter ID / PAN / Driving Licence
- Utility bills (electricity/water)
- Passport Application Receipt (ARN)
- Existing passport (for reissue)
- Rental agreement (if applicable)
What Happens During Verification
A police officer may:
- Visit your home or call you to the police station
- Check your identity documents
- Confirm how long you’ve lived at the address
- Ask neighbors for confirmation
- Submit a digital report via the mPassport Police App
